Project Overview

uber38 is a brand new unisex hair and beauty salon, conveniently situated on North Hill in Plymouth, walking distance from “just about” anywhere but with the advantage of very close public parking for those wishing to save their footwear.

Hair and beauty is available for men and women of all ages, appointments or walk-ins are welcome at all times, well, preferably during their opening hours.

uber38 can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

Project Overview

The Army Cadet Force (ACF) is one of the UK’s most popular and successful youth organisations. Started in 1860, the ACF now has over 1,700 detachments, 7,000 adult volunteers and over 45,000 Cadets. The D Company Devon ACF has detachments in Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Brixham, Newton Abbot, Paignton, Teignmouth, Torquay and Totnes.

The new D Company Devon ACF web site is built using WordPress and makes use of the Contact Form 7, NextGen Gallery and Event Calendar plugins. The site has been optimised for mobile web so any iPhone, Blackberry or Android device will get the best user experience possible.

Project Overview

Clive Sleeman Photography is a WordPress web site making use of the WP-ecommerce plugin.

Clive became a professional digital photographer in 2008, due to his love of Cornwall and the South West. He concentrates his efforts on inspirational coastal scenes, landscapes, wildlife and all things dramatic in the counties, but his real passion is artistic photography. He also enjoys working and taking photos of pets and children, spending time with the subjects to capture natural, rather than posed, images.

The initial project brief entailed not only creating a site that could showcase Clive’s work but one that would allow his many customers the chance to purchase photography direct from the site. When designing the site I have tried to keep the focus on the photography, keeping the photos large wherever possible, but not so large they cause the site to load slowly and hinder the user experience.

TStar Academy are based in Harrow and offer group and one-to-one tennis coaching for a range of age groups and abilities. The web site has been designed with the younger generation in mind with a bright modern colour scheme.

The Vintage Shabby Chic web site brings together a broad range of vintage and shabby chic products to suit a variety of interests including antique, rustic and modern classics, alongside retro and more unusual items.

The site is an e-commerce store designed using WordPress and making use of the WP e-commerce plugin.

Future Kayaks

Project Overview

The Future Kayaks web site is now online. The client is currently in the process of setting up the business, including designing and building a number of new kayaks. Whilst this time consuming process is taking place the move was taken to get the site online so potential customers could at least see some content when visiting the site. Over the next few months content will be loaded as it becomes available. The site design is almost finished with some coding still to be completed.

Although I have been designing web sites for some time now I have tended to avoid using content management systems due to a lack of coding knowledge. Having used Joomla! in the past and not really liking it very much I have been looking for a more user friendly alternative; something I could use for future clients web sites that would allow them to update their own site with relative ease.

I have been aware of WordPress for some time but never really looked at it until recently. I decided to give WordPress a go with the aim of recoding the standard template to look exactly like my current web site. With the exception of a few minor differences including the “proudly powered by WordPress” statement in the footer and the “register” and “log in” links at the top of the side bar I have been successful in recreating the exact look of the main Retro Edge Web Design site.

The WordPress installation you see here is a recoded version of the default installation (see image to the right). To get the WordPress default installation looking exactly like my main site I had to recode a number of files including header.php, footer.php, sidebar.php etc. etc. Due to the menu structure of the main site I stripped out most of the WordPress sidebar menus and widgets; which I can see would be useful for future projects but were not relevant for my current requirements. As well as wanting to test out the various features of WordPress I wanted to add a comments feature to my site so users could comment on blogs and articles.
